Platforms & Innovation
So what is a systems integrator doing with an R&D department? Surely RIWO provides customized services to a diverse range of clients? Want to know what that's like? Then read on!

Keeping up with innovations
The challenges in mechanical engineering don't lie. Automation, digitization, robotics, artificial intelligence, predictive maintenance, and all of it flexible and modular. Technology is developing rapidly and new applications follow each other in rapid succession. How do you keep up with all these innovations? In this Tech Talk, I take you through the philosophy of the R&D department at RIWO and how our platforms unlock the latest technology for application in our customers' products.

Track record
Traditionally a system integrator, RIWO has a wonderful track record in industrial automation. Our control solutions can be found in a wide range of machines and in different markets. RIWO works with various suppliers, and for each challenge we look for the components and solutions that are best suited. All this experience is encapsulated in our Technology Foundation. This acts as a 'menu' for new solutions.
And while different clients' challenges are obviously different, there are often parallels between different systems. We are goal-oriented and don't like to duplicate work. We have become good at reusing pieces from previously created solutions. These "technology building blocks" help create reliable new control solutions quickly. After all, the individual components have already proven themselves in another project and are already running in practice. Examples of building blocks include software libraries for generic functions, as well as macros for hardware design and assembly standards for panel building.
Distinctiveness
That's nice, of course, but you find this approach with more system integrators. The real distinctiveness of RIWO lies in other areas. For example, the average system integrator does not have an R&D department, RIWO does. Within R&D we extend the thinking in technology building blocks. From the various markets and by following developments in technology, we are well aware of the different functional needs of machine builders. In our platforms, which are in line with social trends, we combine proven building blocks to achieve generic functionality. We can quickly arrive at new applications by supplementing platform functionality with customization; after all, each application has its specific concerns.
The platforms are a logical extension of thinking in reusable building blocks. By focusing on generic functionality, we provide a solution for a whole range of applications: metal sorting, fruit picking and weed staking all require the "recognize objects with artificial intelligence" function. The approach route from functionality reveals the corresponding
needs from different applications and ultimately increases the number of systems where functionality runs in production. More feedback from the field then drives the speed of development and improvement.

Driven by collaboration
RIWO R&D does not work in isolation. Within projects carried out from our innovation service, we make new technical developments ready for industrial practice. This is development together with clients, driven by the client's specific problems. Here we spot generic functionality that could be suitable for incorporation into platforms.
In addition, we follow technology and knowledge development. We have links with innovative technology suppliers and knowledge institutions for practical research. Together with those partners, we explore the latest state of technology. Together we experiment in case studies derived from the practice of our customers. Use of various subsidy schemes makes it possible to participate in this type of development project.
For example, we are constantly advancing the RIMOTE, RIBOTIC and RINEWABLE platforms. Because of the various forms of collaboration, we as an R&D department are able to develop from a wide variety of technologies for a very diverse set of markets. From web applications for machine control to sensor fusion for localization of mobile robots. As a result, we also cover a fairly wide range of TRL levels: from experimentation to implementation in the field.
Because we do development in open innovation structures, together with partners and customers, we naturally share the results of those developments. Improvements in generic functionality become available to all users of that generic functionality. And so we ensure that our customers keep up with the rapid developments.
R&D: right at RIWO!
In the development of our platforms, we combine two of RIWO 's strengths as a system integrator: thinking from a functional need and cooperating with various parties. Supplemented by curiosity and enthusiasm for technology, all the ingredients are present to make innovations possible for our clients using our platforms. Bring on those challenges!
