Cobots take over heavy and repetitive work, reduce physical strain, and enable a compact, consistent process with a single operator.
Background
In a high-tech production environment, employees perform manual lifting tasks to test heavy components after production and fill them with oil. Due to their weight and large dimensions, these components are difficult to handle, especially because lifting involves twisting movements.
The work is repetitive and physically demanding, which is ergonomically unfavorable for the operators. The central question focuses on which solutions can reduce the physical strain.
Challenge
from physical strain to smart automation
RIWO has been involved in developing a solution from the outset. During a graduation research project, RIWO and the customer explored various options. RIWO actively provided input and made a test robot available to put ideas to the test in practice. It soon became clear that a cobot offered the most suitable solution.
The layout and general specifications are determined during the pre-engineering phase. RIWO and Machinefabriek Tuinte work closely together during the engineering phase. RIWO is responsible for the hardware and software engineering, while Tuinte develops the mechanical design.
During the implementation phase, RIWO builds the switch cabinets and Tuinte manufactures the mechanical components, while the software is further developed. During the testing phase at RIWO, all disciplines come together, which underlines the importance of extensive testing for a robust and reliable solution.
The final step takes place at the customer's site, where the installation is integrated into the existing machines. Location-specific differences require a few adjustments, after which the solution is fully operational.
Solution
To structurally reduce physical strain and simplify the process, two cobots are used in mirrored cells. This setup makes the production environment more compact and ensures greater calm and consistency in the process. Thanks to automation, the cobot takes over the heavy and repetitive tasks, allowing the operator to supervise and monitor quality. The work is now lighter, clearer, and more efficient.
