Cross-Wind Blower System

Industry - Systems integration - Machine control

A tool for simulating airflow around electric aircraft.

Background

The end customer is developing the first prototypes of electric aircraft. These innovative aircraft will require extensive testing on a wide range of parameters to evaluate and optimize their performance. One crucial test includes the assessment and measurement of airflow around the aircraft.

To perform these tests accurately and consistently, a special tool is required: the Cross-Wind Blower. This system plays a key role in simulating realistic airflows around the aircraft and allows the collection of important data that contribute to the further development of the prototype.

Challenge

One of the biggest challenges in developing the Cross-Wind Blower is ensuring even airflow. This evenness is essential to provide reliable and reproducible measurements.
In order to create a constant and uniform airflow, precise control and regulation of the powerful fans via special grilles at the blower discharge opening is crucial. This requires a sophisticated control system that can dynamically adjust blower performance based on the required test conditions. This approach is necessary to optimally distribute the airflow and minimize any turbulence. Moreover, this custom project must be realized within a tight lead time.

Solution

In cooperation with VIRO and Westerhof, an advanced machine concept was developed for the Cross-Wind Blower. The basis of the system consists of four powerful fans, each with an output of 220 kW. These fans are designed to generate a controlled airflow that is blown around the aircraft. In order to control the airflow continuously, variable speed drives with a total power of over1 MW were used.
The system is supported by simulation measurements, which verify that the airflow reaches the correct positions precisely and evenly. This approach combines advanced mechanical designs with a high-performance control system, resulting in a reliable and effective solution for testing airflow on electric aircraft.
