Hydraulic power units for the offshore industry
Industry - Manufacturing - Mobile control
Control configuration in hydraulic power units for the offshore industry and other sectors. The modular design makes it possible to create multiple variants based on a single, uniform platform.
Background
Offshore oil, gas, and wind projects play a key role in the energy industry. These large-scale offshore structures require a stable foundation.
CAPE Holland supplies advanced Vibro Lifting Tools for this purpose. Instead of traditional pile driving, controlled vibrations are used to drive foundation piles into or out of the seabed.
To prevent a pile from sinking or shifting uncontrollably during vibration, a pile clamp system is used. This system is connected to the pile via a hydraulic clamping mechanism.
The system is controlled via various systems, including the hydraulic power units developed and built in-house by CAPE Holland. RIWO is responsible for the control configuration.
Challenge
Although the CAPE Vibro Lifting Tool is very large, space is limited in the offshore environment. As a result, the hydraulic power units have been designed to be as compact as possible. This also means that space within the hydraulic power units is limited.
The control panels are manufactured at RIWO, while field installation—which involves installing the controls and running the cabling—takes place inside the power unit itself. This requires careful coordination and close collaboration to ensure that the system as a whole functions properly.
Solution
What began as a control solution for a configuration with three diesel engines was later developed into a version with two diesel engines. Based on this further development, a modular concept was created in collaboration with CAPE Holland. Within this concept, functional building blocks have been standardized, while variations in diesel engine configuration, size, and application can be implemented flexibly.
This modular design makes it possible to create multiple variants based on a single, uniform platform. This results in greater reusability, shorter engineering and lead times, and consistent performance across different machine variants. In addition, the modular model simplifies maintenance, service, and future expansions, as new configurations can be integrated without having to redesign the entire system.
RIWO assembles the control cabinets and handles the cabling in the power units. The planning and execution of the field installation are coordinated through regular progress meetings between CAPE Holland and RIWO. This structured collaboration contributes to efficient implementation and a fully functional end result.
