Development of the Jadon Chewing Gum Remover

Industry - System integration - Mobile control

Smart and sustainable cleaning of public areas - without chemicals.

Background

Municipalities have to deal with persistent soiling of streetwork by chewing gum, algae, mosses and gray mold, among other things. Regular maintenance methods, such as sweeping or chemical cleaning, often do not provide a structural solution. Cleaning specialist Jadon wanted to develop an innovative machine that effectively addresses this contamination - without the use of chemicals and with minimal environmental impact.

Together with RIWO, they developed an advanced cleaning machine that not only completely removes chewing gum, but also deeply cleans the entire street surface. The result: clean paving (not just light spots on the pavement where the chewing gum has been removed), improved appearance of the public space and a sustainable cleaning method. Jadon wanted this cleaning machine to use only clean water as the cleaning agent.

From their expertise as cleaning specialists, they know at Jadon that water at a sufficiently high temperature is capable of effectively dissolving stubborn soiling such as oil and grease stains, gray mold, food residue, moss and even chewing gum. The combination of very high temperature and precisely regulated pressure is essential for optimal cleaning results. Moreover, the heat eliminates bacteria and organic matter, which not only neutralizes unpleasant odors but also suppresses the growth of algae and mosses for a long time. The machine had to be able to both clean and simultaneously vacuum up all dirt - including chewing gum.
Because the practice involves a variety of street pavement types, the system had to be broadly applicable, regardless of grout type, stone type or surface finish. In addition, the desire was expressed to make maximum use of energy recovery by reusing the steam absorbed in the process.

Solution

Together, an advanced cleaning machine was developed that deeply cleans the entire street surface. The machine applies hot steam through a nozzle with a working width of one meter. This steam, with temperatures up to 140°C, is sucked back up immediately after application, making the system completely closed and preventing pollution from spreading. This closed system makes it possible to reuse a significant portion of the thermal energy; about 30 to 40 percent is returned to the system. Inside the machine, the dirty water is then filtered. The dirt goes to the landfill; the filtered water disappears into the sewer. The machine is capable of cleaning about 1,000 square meters daily, removing 85 to 90 percent of the gum present.
Thanks to the combination of high temperature and precisely adjusted pressure, optimal results are achieved. The control of the cleaning process is via IQAN control. Because the process is adjustable, almost all types of pavements can be cleaned.

Controls

This "gum remover" from Jadon is equipped with Parker IQAN control, a reliable and flexible system for optimal machine control. RIWO has years of experience with Parker IQAN and applies this technology for efficient, accurate and user-friendly control of its machines.
The machines are remotely serviceable, Jadon can easily access them online with a few clicks. They can easily do remote diagnostics, update software to systems, manage customer configurations and make them available, or set up notifications about systems for users.

Today, RIWO is responsible for the production of control sets for mass-produced machines. In addition to the software and control electronics and controls, RIWO also takes care of all the wiring and operates the machine until it is ready for use. They then deliver it back to Jadon, which assumes end-customer operation.
