Background
A robotic packing machine to automatically pack pears and simultaneously sort fruit by size and quality.
The machine is great for the trickier Conference pears that are often more irregular in shape.
Challenge
For proper inspection, it is very important that the pear can be seen from any position. This makes it possible to perform quality checks to divide the pears into different categories. Categories are determined by rot, disease, shape, presence of stem or presence of leaves. The precision position must also be determined where to pick the pear. RIWO has developed algorithms based on artificial intelligence (AI) to achieve this functionality.
Solution
The RIBOTIC Perception platform is the most important part of the machine. Using AI technology, the pears are inspected. Sorted accordingly and placed in the right place and position in the crate. Pears of inferior quality are placed by the robotic arm in another crate or on another discharge conveyor. The Smart Robot Fruit Packer uses a Delta robot with a suction cup, which can move up to 60 pears per minute.
