Electrification of pile drivers: from challenge to solution.
Background
The Dutch Cape is a supplier of piling equipment and supplies diesel-powered equipment to construction contractors. Due to stricter requirements in tenders, the use of electric machines is becoming increasingly mandatory. Because the company did not yet offer electric pile drivers, it was losing market share because its customers could not participate in certain tenders. Moreover, it lacked the expertise to electrify piling machines according to European legislation.
To address this challenge, a conceptualization workshop was initiated to address the electrification challenge holistically. Riwo organized the workshop to explore the key areas of concern and create a detailed action plan.
After conducting the workshop, Cape's management had:
- A clear understanding of the technical solutions to the desired electrification needs.
- A concrete understanding of development costs and opportunities.
- A rationale for the investment proposal.
This approach helped Cape move more quickly through the idea & concept phase and move to an engineering assignment in a well-founded way.
Approach: conceptualization workshop
The workshop was designed to map the total impact of electrification and make choices about the first technical development steps. The energy requirement during the crane's working process was mapped and converted to a total electricity requirement as well as cooling capacity. The following topics were covered during this session:
- Technical capabilities:
The various options for electrification of construction machinery were explored and insight was provided into remote monitoring of the energy consumption of the machinery fleet. - Legal requirements:
The technical solutions with which the machines could comply with European regulations were identified. - Project Approach:
A clear roadmap was established, from development to market launch.
Thanks to this approach, Cape achieved several benefits.
- Compliance with European legislation, which allowed contractors to participate in tenders again.
- Expanding market position, by introducing an electric pile driver.
- Clear understanding of technical capabilities, which supported strategic decision making.
- A concrete plan of action and investment proposal, which successfully realized the development of the electric pile driver.
